- As a longtime promoter of at home self care I’ve been thrilled to test out some of these awesome home styling boxes and tips! If you’re looking to try something new or just refresh your beauty routine, check out these 13+ ideas to use at home. I’m also offering reviews on subscription boxes including FabFitFun, Stitch Fix, and IPSY as well as other online shops like LulaRoe, Knix and Pura Vida!
Why Choose At-Home Self-Care and Style Options?
While many places around the country are “opening back up”, I’m still firmly in the stay-home camp. That includes my at home self care needs. In my search for bringing style to my front door, I’ve been doing some of these tips for years (including at-home hair color). However I was excited to explore a few new-to-me options including subscription boxes for style and self care items. With these awesome at-home choices, I might never go back to shopping in brick & mortar stores again!
I was actually surprised to find that at-home shopping can be a budget-friendly experience. I guess I equated it to grocery delivery, which often has a surcharge. But I was able to find high quality products at very reasonable prices. Free shipping was also a plus! Be sure to read each section for discount codes you can apply through some of these online shopping links. I’ve also included other ways to save money when shopping for at-home self care and style items.
How Does Online Style Shopping Work for Moms?
The pros of online style shopping?
- Ability to shop when you want (safely from your sofa) and not just when the stores are open.
- Try on clothes and accessories at home and easily return what you don’t want.
- Able to refresh your style with products you might not have tried if you chose them yourself.
- Not having to drag your kids into the dressing room with you (that’s a nightmare, right?!)
And the cons of shopping for at home self care items online?
- You can’t touch and feel the fabric, quality or see details in the construction.
- Inability to try things on before purchasing.
- Some style boxes include surprise items you won’t be able to choose yourself.
- Getting the ideal fit can be tricky between brands.
Of course, online clothing and style shopping has been around for a long time and some places are better than others. I’m sharing my experience and tips with several online companies. Keep reading for the reviews on Stitch Fix, Knix period panties, IPSY, LulaRoe and FabFitFun, among others.
How Does Stitch Fix Work?
I recently tried Stitch Fix for the very first time and showed off what I received in these two live Facebook unboxing videos and on my Instagram stories. Stitch Fix has been around for years, but this was my first time trying the subscription box styling service.
Each month you’ll receive 5 styling pieces chosen by a Stitch Fix stylish. You may choose to keep or return what you don’t want (if you keep it all, you’ll receive a 25% discount on the entire order). What the stylist sends is based on the “Style Quiz” that you take when signing up. This includes a price range and which styling pieces you want or don’t want. Each day you can log in and give thumbs up or down to potential styles, which helps your stylist determine your ideal looks.
Shipping back to Stitch Fix is prepaid, including for size swaps. You are able to message your stylist, letting them know exactly what you’d like to see inside your next box. Don’t need any clothes? You can easily skip your scheduled shipment on their website.
Will Stitch Fix Work for You?
I’ve found that with Stitch Fix it pays off to be very specific on what you want and need when talking to your stylist. For instance, I explained that I liked floral prints but didn’t want anything “old lady”. I shared that I wanted summer shorts that weren’t too tiny. In reply I’ve received several floral tops and shorts that are an appropriate length for me.
Styling pieces include clothing as well as shoes, purses, jewelry and other accessories. You can also note which pieces you would prefer not to receive. I enjoy shopping for clothing and have been so excited to see what outfits my stylist finds for me. Stitch Fix is an awesome way to expand your wardrobe horizons or think outside the box. It’s also a fun way to shop for a special event or to give your closet a refresh.
It’s important to keep an open mind when receiving new items until you have a chance to try them on. What you see in an image may turn you off, but it might look fantastic once you’re wearing it! Click the link to sign up and receive $25 off your first Stitch Fix shipment.
More Tips to Shopping for Clothing Online
Measure yourself and compare your measurements in the sizing graphs before you put anything into your shopping cart. Brands and styles vary so even if you think you’re a particular size, it’s best to just measure and double-check!
Is there a style that just looks GREAT on you? Then you should own more than one and make it your signature look. The LulaRoe Nicki dress is that for me. It’s a basic tank dress in a modest length that’s perfectly flattering (and it has pockets!). I own 6 of them and always adding more (I’m wearing one as I write this article!).
A little more about LulaRoe, they are so much more than just leggings now, carrying a full line of very fashionable styles. In addition to the Nicki, I love the Mitzi and Olive tops, the Caroline open cardigan and my denim jeans. Yes, LulaRoe has the most comfortable and best-fitting jeans (with a hidden elastic waistband to help prevent gaping in back).
The new LuLaRoe ponytail baseball hat is my go-to lately. Since my hair is in a pony 99% of the time, I’m loving that the hat has built-in elastic straps for pony-tail placement.
FabFitFun – A Big Box of Self-Care Goodness for Mom
I’ve seen the FabFitFun advertisements but wasn’t sure this box of trendy products was right for me. Thank goodness I kept an open mind, because I fell in love with all the things! I received the Summer Editor’s Box to try out and was beyond excited with everything I received (so much that I’ve already signed myself up for the entire year!).
Upon registration, you’ll be able to complete a personal profile based on your likes, dislikes and needs. They’ll ask what your favorite things are out of categories including beauty products, fitness workout style, fashion and home goods. Each season you’ll have the opportunity to customize 3 of the items in your box. Upgrade to an annual membership and you can choose from two additional categories yourself! FabFitFun will send several additional items in the box that they’ll choose for you based upon your profile. I received a total of 8 items in my Summer Editor’s Box
Receive something that’s not-quite-you? Save it for a gift that someone else is sure to love. Some single items in the box retail for more that what you’ll pay for the entire box!
What’s in a FabFitFun Box?
Each seasonal box includes products in the fashion, beauty, fitness and lifestyle categories. There’s also a FabFitFun magazine inside. This is what I received in my Summer Editor’s Box:
- Oscar de la Renta Lana Aviator Sunglasses
- NassifMD Detox Pads
- CZ by Kenneth Jay Lane Round Bezel Necklace
- HydroPeptide Bambusa Blackhead Banisher
- Moroccan Gold Series Leave-in Hair Mask
- MakeUp Eraser
- Spongelle Body Wash Infused Buffer in Black Orchid
- Vera Mona Color Switch Solo
I’ve been able to try out full-sized products of high quality new-to-me brands. I’m loving how pampered I feel with these beautiful products in hand! In addition, each person that signs up can access FabFitFun TV with on-demand cooking and fitness programs.
Who doesn’t love getting a big box in the mail, full of special at home self care treats just for YOU?! I literally locked myself in my bedroom when my FabFitFun box arrived so I could enjoy looking at all the fun things just for me. The best part? This box has a retail value over $200 – but it only costs $49! And you can get it for even less. Save $10 off your first FabFitFun box when you use code MOMREWRITTEN.
Underneath It All – Knix Leak Proof Underwear
Have you heard of “period panties”? Knix was recommended to me in my Mom Rewritten Facebook group and I immediately purchased the Leakproof Panties. These can be worn during your period in place of tampons and pads. But I was super excited to read about how they offer protection from sweat, which is awesome during the hot summer season. They also protect against occasional bladder leakage too, ahem!
I have to say, I’m loving how comfortable and protective they Knix leak proof panties are. They are sleek and lightweight, yet still offered me complete coverage (and no leaks) during my period. Nothing bulky about them, they are super-sexy!
Knix Underwear in All the Nudes
No bold funky patterns here. Knix carries elegant solids in nude tones to match a wide variety of skin tones. The Knix site is very easy to navigate. Plus their images and model line is amazingly diverse so you’ll be able to see how your body shape will look in their clothing.
I’ll be writing up a full review of period panties including Knix and will be linking here soon! Because underwear from Knix is not returnable upon opening the package, take the time to measure ahead of time. Look at the images of the models (each photo shows what size they’re wearing so you can find the right fit).
I also picked up the WingWoman Contour Bra with my three pairs of underwear. For the bras, you’ll have 30 days upon delivery to wash and wear at home. Shop through the Knix link and use code knix10 for $10 off your order at checkout.
Summer Jewelry Must-Haves
Pura Vida is a San Diego based accessories company, with fresh and simple designs. Pieces are ethically-produced from artisans around the world and have a nature vibe with a nod to the ocean and mountains. I appreciate that Pura Vida jewelry has no “age range”. Their beautiful pieces feel just as much at home around my wrist as on a trendy teen.
I love Pura Vida accessories, especially in the summer because I can put on their jewelry and completely forget that I’m wearing it. The pieces are breezy and lightweight with cotton braiding, delicate charms and sterling silver. I’ve shared other pieces in photos throughout this article (see the captions).
To add just the right touch to your summer outfits, you can’t go wrong with Pura Vida. Sign up for the monthly Pura Vida Jewelry Club and receive two exclusive, surprise on-trend pieces for under $20!
Shoe Shopping Online?
Buying shoes online is tricky for me. I have strangely sized feet, with one slightly larger than the other. When I find a shoe I like and that fits me well, I tend to purchase several pairs. Comfort is important but so is style (nobody wants to look like they’re wearing Grandma’s orthopedic shoes!)
One tip for online shoe shopping is to repurchase a pair of shoes that you already have and love. You’ll know which size to buy already. Another tip is to look for forgiving styles with stretchy fabrics or tie laces. Free returns when you shop for shoes online is a must! If you’re between two sizes, consider purchasing both sizes and keeping the pair that fits best.
Comfortable and Versatile Walking Shoes
I was sent a pair of Bzees shoes to try out at home. The comfort level is beyond! Lightweight cloud technology with air infused outsoles and free-foam footbeds let me walk comfortably all day. And the dynamic stretch uppers means that the shoe fits snugly without pinching. My favorite part is that all Bzees are machine washable! I’m wearing the Bzees Glee in light gray knit and they look just as cute paired with jeans as they do with my sundresses.
More Shoes to Find Online
Another one of my go-to brands is Natural Soul, with comfortable but stylish sandals that are perfect for warm weather. The Amore Open Toed Slingback is my favorite, with it’s elastic bands that allow for flexibility and swelling during long days on your feet.
Crocs. Yes, I know. They are most famous for those awkward clogs but they also have cute and comfy sandals that are ideal for summer. The Capri Basic Wedge sandal goes just as well with a sundress as it does with a swimsuit. For dress-up nights, the Leigh II Ankle-Strap Wedge is the only heel I’ll wear.
Go-To Hair Accessories
In the summer months, I just want my hair back and off my face. Having a cute collection of these stylish Popband hair elastics means I can stash them in various places. I keep a few in my purse and in my desk (and don’t you know that my daughter snagged those Unicorn Popbands!).
At Home Self-Care Spa Delights
You know I’m big on self-care and these spa treatments are ideal for a splurge at home. Within minutes, you’ll feel like you’re really taking care of yourself.
- The Rose Gold and Silver 7th Heaven Peel Off Mask are a cleansing treat. Made with pulped fruit, flowers and herbs, the masks make my skin silky soft.
- From Popmask, these self-warming steam masks are like relaxation in a box. Self-warming when removed from their pouch, each box comes with 5 eye masks. The masks loop behind your ears so they are perfect for use right before bed, during meditation time or whenever you need a break. The Popmask stays warm for about 20 minutes (I fell asleep before it got cold!).
DIY Manicures and Pedicures
Who needs expensive nail salons? You really only need a few things on hand to give yourself a pampering mani/pedi at home. This manicure lasted me a week before wearing off. SOPHi was my go-to polish for my DIY manicure. This is the company that also makes the popular kid’s polish line, Piggy Polish, which we used in our at -home Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique makeover.
- Soak your feet or hands in a bath of warm water. Epsom salts are good and help to soften rough spots. I have this inexpensive bubbling Foot Spa that I use for my feet.
- Use SOPHi Nail Polish Remove Sticks (made of soft wood) to remove build-up from underneath nails. Gently push back cuticles and trim away excess with nippers.
- SOPHi Prime + Shine + Seal System is non-toxic and completely free of all harsh chemicals. SOPHi is also cruelty-free, vegan and water-based, so it won’t cause yellowing or brittle nails. A hair dryer used between the coats helps make the polish hard and long-lasting.
- To remove, a drop of acetone-free SOPHi Nail Polish Stripper and Remover Sticks get it all off quickly.
Makeup Treats Delivered to Your Door
I love makeup and was so excited when I found out about IPSY. The Ipsy Glam Bag is just $12 per month and includes 5 generous samples inside of a make-up bag. You’ll choose one of the products and the other four are packed based on your specific needs (you’ll complete a quiz when you register). Purchase a single month at a time, add on full-sized items to the bag or go for all-out glam with a year-long subscription.
This is the perfect way to try out makeup and refresh your look with something new and exciting. The samples are large enough for you to test and see if the product is a good fit for you. If you fall in love, IPSY offers items in full sizes for purchase so you can stock up. And this is another thing where you might receive something you don’t need or want. Just save it for a stocking stuffer or to bless a friend!
I received my first IPSY Glam Bag and have been enjoying trying out the new products. My Make Waves themed bag was packed with eye shadow, eye liner, mascara, sunscreen and cleanser. And did I mention that everything comes in a specially designed bag each month? I’m tossing out my old makeup and replacing with my new IPSY goodies!
