Prioritizing Dental Hygiene as an Adult
My Personal Story About Developing an Adult Dental Hygiene Routine
It’s Not Too Late to Start
Consistent dental care, appointments and best practices to floss, brush and rinse have turned things around in my own dental health. I now have excellent reports from the dentist, gingivitis is at bay and I have improved overall gum health. Using LISTERINE® Gum Therapy antiseptic mouthwash has been key.
I ordered LISTERINE® Gum Therapy antiseptic mouthwash online through Walmart. Delivery had it at my front door the very next day.
Even if you’ve neglected your oral hygiene in the past or have never flossed or used mouthwash in the past, it’s really never too late to start. By starting a complete dental overhaul today, you can actually reverse the signs of early gum disease. LISTERINE® Gum Therapy antiseptic mouthwash can help!
What’s the Proper Dental Hygiene Order?
If you’ve only been using a basic toothbrush and paste in your adult dental hygiene routine, you might wonder how to work in other steps. Here’s the proper order for a daily and yearly dental routine.
- Schedule a dental check-up and cleaning for every 6 months. Regular care from a dentist will keep up with good dental and gum health.
- Flossing is the first step in a daily adult dental hygiene routine. A friend with gaps between her teeth assumed that flossing was only for those with food bits between the teeth. But truly everyone should floss to reach below the gum line.
- Next up is brushing. 2 minutes, twice daily, with a fluoride toothpaste is the rule.
- Wrap up your daily adult dental hygiene routine with a 30 second rinse of LISTERINE® Gum Therapy antiseptic mouthwash. While brushing is important twice a day, regular use of LISTERINE® Gum Therapy antiseptic mouthwash can lead to 4x healthier gums in 3 weeks versus brushing alone.
Daily Flossing the Right Way
Flossing clears out the plaque that a tooth brush can’t remove. Everyone should be flossing once a day in combination with brushing and use of LISTERINE® Gum Therapy antiseptic mouthwash. I have extremely tight teeth and a jaw that makes flossing difficult. However practice makes perfect. I’ve learned a few flossing techniques to make the best of this daily routine.
It’s possible that you’ve never been properly schooled on how to use dental floss the correct way. In combination with my regular dental check-ups and cleanings, I also have periodontal treatments. My periodontist recently showed me how to hold and maneuver the floss effectively for the best cleaning.
Waxed floss can help with the glide but may be too thick for those with tight teeth. Try a variety of different types of floss to find the one that works best for you. Wrap the length of floss around your middle finger then use your pointer fingers to guide the floss between the teeth. Floss should slide down gently below the gum line on either side of the tooth, “hugging” each tooth.
Brushing Twice a Day (or More)
Two times a day, brushing with a toothbrush and toothpaste is a must-do. If you’re trying to regain your gum and dental health, consider working in an additional brushing after lunch. Do you drink lots of coffee, tea or foods that may stain your teeth (like blueberries)? Brush afterwards with a whitening toothpaste to prevent stains.
An electric toothbrush will give better daily cleaning than a manual. If you haven’t added a vibrating toothbrush to your adult dental hygiene routine you’ll appreciate the efficient cleaning! Many electric toothbrushes also offer a built-in timer and alert so you can focus on 30 seconds in each quadrant of your mouth during a brushing.
What About Bleeding Gums?
If you’re not used to daily flossing, you might be disturbed by the sore, bleeding gums that happen after you floss. This is actually an early sign of gum disease. I know that when I was first incorporating daily flossing, my gums would bleed each time then be bright red and puffy. Regular use of LISTERINE® Gum Therapy antiseptic mouthwash can help reverse red inflamed gums since it cleans below the gum line where brushing doesn’t reach.
